Does Your Child Argue About Everything? Maybe He's Got ODD

I'm the parent of five adopted kids, and I'm here to tell you that I know a little about oppositional defiance disorder in children, or ODD for short. Dr. James Lehman, behavioral therapist and creator of The Total Transformation Program for parents, says that a day with a child with oppositional defiance behavior is a series of battles in an undeclared war. It starts when they wake up, continues at breakfast, intensifies when they have to get dressed, and doesnt end until they fight with you over bedtime.

What is Oppositional Defiance Disorder?

The face of an Oppositional Defiance behavior child is usually angry, frustrated, raging, resentful (esp. of adults), bossy, annoyed, blaming. They find themselves always looking to put the blame on their unhappiness on anyone other than them and find coping is almost impossible. Their choice of friends of that also reflect these behaviors is not uncommon.

A common complaint by Oppositional Defiant children is they don't ever get what they want. This is become it is hard for them to use rational thinking. They want you to pay attention to them, however when you do you get shoved away. The crux of all this is these kids are difficult to like. That opens up another can of worms - feeling like a lousy parent cause you love your kid, but being with them is highly distasteful. Add their over-the-top behavior when you are around others and it is just plain hard.

I understand this because I have a few children that fall into this camp. The emotions of raising an ODD kid are difficult to handle.

Where did the Oppositional Defiance Disorder come from?

ODD is not a self-esteem issue; it's a problem solving issue. In a nutshell, they don't know how to solve a problem, so they try to gain control by bullying, screaming, negotiating, or bargaining. According to Dr. Lehman, there is no evidence that self-esteem leads to compliance, and emotions are not, in and of themselves, a way for kids to cope with their problems.

What can you do to stop the war and restore peace at home?

It is time to change your parenting plan. Yep, timeouts for ODD kiddos are "revenge planning time" not "thinking about new behavior time". Dr. Lehman has actually come up with several ideas for your new plan and I would like to share 4 of those hints with you. You can find the rest in his Total Transformation program. However, I must tell you the tips I have chosen, I have started using them with my kids and I am so excited about the differences they are making.

1. Children with ODD need structure with aggressive training that is built around how to solve the problems that trigger their defiant behavior. You need to show the child that he has a problem that has to be solved and address it as such. For example: Lying in bed after your alarm goes off won't solve your problem. It makes you late and you miss the bus. What can you do to solve your problem?

2. To treat Opppositional Defiance disorder in children, you must key on their compliance issues and coping mechanisms. Self-esteem can't be taught. They learn this intrinsically by completing something that seemed beyond their ability. Add constant, real affirmations and a supportive position with some rewards that are in line with the accomplishment. Do not "praise" down to them for a skill that they were to have already learned.

3. Do not get into a power struggle. Think through your wars and choose wisely. Being sure your choices are battles in which you are guaranteed victory. This maybe as simple as not engaging in the argument. Then establish boundaries in a matter of fact way with the expectation of compliance.

4. Be prepared. Have a strategy in place beforehand is a sure winner. Know what action you will take when he gets rowdy while in your van, socializing, or shopping. And tell him what that plan is "if you act up, I will say 'enough' once then we are out of there". Do not let the defiance achieve the reward he was seeking.

Most of the time, Opposition Defiance Disorder is not a huge thing. It can be nipped in the bud when at the low level stage of defiance as long as they are not aggressive. Mostly it is just annoying to those around them. But be forewarned, untreated it has a great possibility of becoming Conduct Disorder which then would transform into anti-social and criminal behavior. When I first got accepted to Harvard University, I thought I would be receiving the best education that life has to offer. I thought the insights and the wisdom that was shared there would provide me with inspiration for living and creating a well- rounded life. However, I soon realized that this was far from being the case.

Harvard University is just like any other university. Sure, the Harvard admissions standards make sure the students who attend there have stronger mental focus and determination to succeed academically, but this by no means indicates that students who attend Harvard or any of the other prestigious Ivy League schools are somehow better off than students who do not attend such schools.

In fact, in taking a look back at past presidents of Harvard University going back from Henry Dunster all the way to Larry Summers, we will see that none of them had focused on cultivating the human spirit; rather, they aimed to provide mental tools to create citizens with mental expertise, not heart-felt or spiritual insight. This is true for the topics of Theology and Philosophy, as well as for Harvard University PhD programs.

While there may be specialized philosophical and theological topics such as "Philosophy of Man", "Types of Religion in the United States" and "Jesus and Absolute Truth" being taught and lectured on in the philosophy and religion departments, the depth of insight is clearly missing the foundation of what it means to teach philosophy and religion. This criteria has nothing to do with cultivating the best in human potential and the human spirit. In order to be qualified to bring out the best of the human spirit or the human heart, one does not need a Harvard or an Ivy League education; in fact, one does not need any type of formal education whatsoever. Rather, a person simply needs to have had the human vibrancy brought out within their own souls, which can be accomplished very informally. Some of the most prominent spiritual teachers and practitioners who bring out the best in the human spirit and the human heart around the world have had no formal education. Rather, all that some of them have had is a heart-based energetic training from their teacher(s) which does not result in any formal degree or certificate.

If we recognize that human potentiality is not tapped into by our current educational system, of which we view universities like Harvard, Princeton and Yale to be the 'cream of the crop', so to speak, then we can start to work towards shifting our societal focus to the realm that is important in cultivating great human beings... that is, the realm of the human heart. These are not just inspirational stories for work, but rather a means of transforming our world outlook. The last item on my list is probably the fact that affected me most. I hate the thought that lack of exercise or correct diet could cut my life short. I have to admit to hardly ever exercising and being nearly 50 pounds overweight. I also have to admit the facts about being overweight have finally registered! I now realise with some urgency that if I want to watch my kids grow up and meet my future grandchildren, I must stay active and do something about my excess weight immediately!

Anyway, I have made a beginning on this (much to the delight of my husband and family). It seems that the inescapable truth is that there is no easy fix! It is going to take a combination of healthy diet and a regular exercise routine to get in shape. Giving power to the thought of debt will always result in more and more debt. It comes from your thinking about it.
